STEVENS POINT - Because of dangerously cold temperatures, the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point is canceling classes from 5 p.m. today until noon on Thursday at all three of its regional campuses.

Along with classes, activities and athletic events also have been canceled at UWSP campuses in Stevens Point, Marshfield and Wausau, according to a press release from the university.

The decision is a rare one for the university, the release said.

"The National Weather Service forecasts wind chill warnings of 35 to 50 (below) from late this afternoon through late morning Thursday, posing frostbite hazards during even brief periods outdoors," the release read.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures are expected to begin creeping back to normal Thursday afternoon and reach the mid-30s by Sunday.

The UWSP Aber Suzuki Center and American Suzuki Institute will also close through noon on Thursday. All offices will remain open on the campuses, according to UW-Stevens Point.
