Weekly Animal Feed Central U.S.: Feb. 01, 2024
Dry whey prices were unchanged on the range while moving higher on the mostly series this week. Inventories are tightening according to a number of contacts. Milk availability for Class III processing has been somewhat bountiful since prior to the end-of-year holidays, but it is beginning to show signs of tightness, as well. Still, though, the focal point of a growing number of processors has not been drying sweet whey but using whey solids for whey protein concentrate (WPC) manufacturing, as WPC and whey protein isolate markets are, and have been, bullish. Animal feed whey prices were unchanged. A number of feed whey end users suggest they are finding deals on off-spec high-protein blends. Market tones are steady to bullish for Central region dry whey.

CHEESE: Barrels closed at $1.5500 and 40# blocks at $1.6500. The weekly average for barrels is $1.5380 (+0.0790) and blocks, $1.6450. (+0.1330)
CHEESE HIGHLIGHTS: Milk availability has tightened for cheese processors in the Midwest. Spot milk prices were reported at Class to $1 above Class III. Cheese plant managers relay active production schedules, with some reporting an extra day of manufacturing per week. Cheese demand is noted to be mixed. Class I, II, III, and IV demands are steady to stronger. However, some stakeholders relay demand from ice cream manufactures is in a lull. Demand for condensed skim milk is mixed. Cream multiples for all Classes are 1.00-1.25 in the East, 0.900-1.21 in the Midwest, and 0.900-1.19 in the West.
