Weekly Animal Feed, Central U.S.: Jan. 11, 2024

Dry whey prices increased on the top of the mostly series, while holding steady elsewhere. Contacts view the market with mixed takes. Despite winter weather causing setbacks, a number of plant managers running lighter schedules in recent weeks have begun to return to regularly running schedules this week and some plan to run somewhat hearty schedules through the rest of the winter. Still, high protein markets maintaining their recent strengths causes a ripple effect for whey powder markets. Animal feed whey prices, though, did move higher on the top of the range. Animal feed whey markets have grown in trading activity early in the year.

Dairy Market Review: Jan. 12, 2024

BUTTER: Grade AA closed at $2.5450. The weekly average for Grade AA is $2.5644 (+0.0049).

CHEESE: Barrels closed at $1.4675 and 40# blocks at $1.4450. The weekly average for barrels is $1.4613 (+0.0013) and blocks, $1.4825 (-0.0455).

CHEESE HIGHLIGHTS: Winter weather again affected dairy operations in the eastern states. Some milk volumes intended for Class III processing were redirected into bottling for grocery retailers. In the Central region, winter weather also proved to be an obstacle to cheesemakers. Milk is readily available, but cheese production schedules are lighter. Spot milk prices were reported at $7 to $0.50 under Class III. Inventories in the region are comfortable, and demand is seasonally steady. Retail cheese demand has flattened in the West. Milk volumes are readily available for Class III processing. Cheese inventories are steady to stronger.

BUTTER HIGHLIGHTS: Retail and bulk butter demands are steady throughout most of the country. That said, demand from domestic and international buyers is noted as steady to moderate for the Western region. Stakeholders say unsalted butter availability is tighter. Cream loads are readily available, and some Central region cream handlers say finding homes has been an uphill battle. Butter production is mixed. Some butter makers are running lighter production schedules due to weather-related setbacks or planned machine maintenance. Bulk butter overages range from 1 to 8 cents above market, across all regions.

FLUID MILK HIGHLIGHTS: Milk production is a little less normal in the Midwest where a winter weather blast began in the region last week, ultimately affecting portions of every state in the Central region. Contacts in the Central region say there are more questions currently than answers regarding near term milk availability but have relayed similar spot milk prices this week compared to last week. Contacts in all regions note winter weather has recently had a negative impact on manufacturing capacities and transportation. Throughout the country cream is available. Cream multiple ranges for all Classes are: 1.00 - 1.20 in the East, 0.50 - 1.21 in the Midwest, and 1.00 - 1.20 in the West.
